The NBS reports 4.6% growth for the first nine months and 4.5% for the third quarter. Its 1.2% quarter-on-quarter reading is a different comparison.

What the primary record establishes

China’s NBS preliminary estimate puts first-three-quarter GDP at CNY 107,107.1 billion, with constant-price growth of 4.6% from the corresponding 2025 period. Third-quarter growth was 4.5% year on year, following 4.3% in the second quarter. National Bureau of Statistics of China — First three quarters of 2026, 19 October ↗

The release separately reports third-quarter growth of 1.2% quarter on quarter. For the first nine months, tertiary-industry value added increased 5.2%, compared with 3.8% in secondary industry and 3.7% in primary industry. The growth rates and current-price GDP amount have different measurement roles. National Bureau of Statistics of China — First three quarters of 2026, 19 October ↗

What the distinction changes

For a yuan briefing, the release offers evidence on activity rather than a direct currency target. A change in reported output can interact with trade, financing and policy expectations. The headline does not identify which channel dominated the exchange market.

The 4.5% and 1.2% numbers are not competing estimates of the same change. One compares with a year earlier; the other compares with the preceding quarter. Nor should the nine-month cumulative reading be presented as a final full-year result.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

Preserve the preliminary status, reference period and comparison basis. Use the published constant-price growth rate rather than inferring real growth from changes in a nominal yuan amount. Compare later revisions against the same data vintage and definition.

WFN would next compare the sector detail with trade and domestic-demand indicators, then consult official policy communications. It does not infer a particular yuan move, capital-flow outcome or future stimulus decision from this national-accounts release alone.
