The extension adds a user role and expiry. Those fields do not alone establish rental payment or rights to physical property.

What the primary record establishes

ERC-4907 was created on 11 March 2022 and is marked Final. It introduces a temporary user role through setUser, userOf and userExpires. Ethereum — ERC-4907, Final ↗

The user can exercise the application’s specified usage rights without receiving the owner’s powers to transfer the NFT or assign another user. Ethereum — ERC-4907, Final ↗

What the distinction changes

Expiry ends the relevant usage period according to the contract; it is not an ownership transfer. Describing a temporary assignment as a completed sale would merge different states.

The interface does not by itself set rent, deposits, cancellation or dispute resolution. A commercial rental application needs additional conditions for those relationships.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

An integration should check who can call setUser, how time is evaluated and what happens when the NFT transfers. Queries must refer to the intended network and contract.

The standard is a building block for temporary permissions. Commercial or physical rights require their own terms and cannot be inferred merely from the value returned by userOf.
