FINRA’s complaint channel and dispute-resolution processes serve different purposes. Receiving a complaint does not establish that a loss will be repaid.

What the source establishes

FINRA provides an investor-complaint route for concerns involving brokers and brokerage firms. Its guidance distinguishes regulatory review from pursuing a remedy through arbitration, mediation or other appropriate proceedings. A complaint is information for review, not an adjudicated finding. That distinction matters both for the customer’s expectations and for how a firm describes the status of a dispute. An allegation, an investigation and an award are different records; none should be substituted for another.

What the distinction changes

A service workflow can go wrong if it marks the matter resolved simply because a regulator acknowledged receipt. The acknowledgement may confirm delivery without deciding the substance. Equally, the existence of a complaint should not be published as proof that the broker committed misconduct.

A useful case file preserves transaction records, correspondence, the requested remedy and the status of each process separately. That structure helps reviewers understand what has actually happened and what remains contested. It also avoids presenting an internal customer-service response as a legal outcome.

Questions for the next review

Check the current official process, jurisdiction and applicable deadlines for the particular dispute. Retain acknowledgement and case references without assuming they suspend another deadline. Where a legal claim is contemplated, the relevant professional advice must address the actual facts and forum.
