The October flash index rose from 55.9 to 56.0. Orders, output, employment, delivery times and inventories have different weights.

What the primary record establishes

The US flash manufacturing PMI published on 23 October 2026 was 56.0, against September’s 55.9. Responses were collected between 9 and 22 October. S&P Global — Flash US PMI, 23 October 2026 ↗

The manufacturing formula weights new orders at 30%, output at 25%, employment at 20%, delivery times at 15% and purchased inventories at 10%. Delivery times enter the calculation inverted. S&P Global — PMI methodology ↗

What the distinction changes

The headline is therefore not the output component alone. Identical totals can reflect different combinations of demand, hiring and supply-chain conditions.

The 0.1-point increase is a diffusion-index change, not a 0.1% rise in industrial production. A flash observation can also change when the remaining responses arrive.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

For dollar analysis, keep manufacturing, services and national accounts separate. The survey is one window into business conditions, rather than a replacement for all economic measurements.

Read the components and final estimate before claiming a broad acceleration. The documented headline does not, by itself, determine interest rates or prove the cause of a particular exchange-rate movement.
