U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI)
U.S. CPI release dates, headline and core inflation readings, monthly versus annual changes and source links.
What it measures
The Consumer Price Index follows changes in prices paid by urban consumers for a basket of goods and services. Headline CPI covers the full basket; core CPI excludes food and energy. They describe different parts of the same price report.
Read it correctly
Compare annual change with annual change, and monthly change with monthly change. This calendar labels unadjusted annual rates and seasonally adjusted monthly rates separately. A change from 3.4% to 3.5% is 0.1 percentage point, not a 0.1% relative increase.
