What it measures
Nonfarm payrolls measure the monthly change in employment from the U.S. establishment survey. The unemployment rate comes from a separate household survey. Read the two measures together, while keeping their different coverage and units clear.
Read it correctly
Payroll changes are shown in jobs, not thousands of jobs. The previous figure may have been revised in the current release. A revised previous value is not the same thing as the number first published a month earlier. Historical rows below preserve the checked release vintage.
